FRAME 001 / 024

You draw the keyframes.
MotionCel fills the gaps.

An AI tool for 2D animators that generates the clean line-art inbetweens between your drawings — so your hours go to the keys, the timing, the acting. Your line, your call on every frame.

01 — What it is

Built to assist, not replace.

MotionCel is a tool for animators who already know what they're doing. You draw the keyframes that define the motion — MotionCel fills the line-art frames in between. You stay in the driver's seat: keep what works, redraw what doesn't.

What it is

  • An inbetweening assistant for hand-drawn 2D animation
  • Clean line-art frame generation between your two keyframes
  • A way to skip the tedious passes — not the craft

What it isn't (yet)

  • Not a one-click "make me an animation" button
  • Not color, paint, or final comp — line-art inbetweens only for now
  • Not a replacement for your eye, your timing, or your style

// MVP-honest: we're early. We'd rather under-promise and show you exactly what it does.

02 — Where your hours go

Inbetweening is most of the frames in a sequence — and most of it is mechanical: tracing the path between two drawings you've already made.

That's time not spent on the keys, the timing, the acting — the decisions only you can make.

~80% of frames are inbetweens

Animators draw 1 in every 5–10 frames. The rest is mechanical inbetweening — tracing between drawings you've already made.

The grind, not the craft

It's the most repetitive job in animation — hours retracing paths between keys you nailed in minutes.

Nothing's built for line art

Every AI video tool works on rendered footage. None work on raw black-and-white line art — the format you actually draw in.

03 — How it works

Three steps.
You keep control.

Right now, MotionCel generates clean line-art inbetweens — the frames between two of your line drawings.

01

Draw your keyframes

Make the first and last drawing of an action — exactly like you always have. Clean black-and-white line art, any style.

// your hand · your line
02

MotionCel fills the gap

Hand over your two keyframes. MotionCel generates the inbetween frames as clean line art in the same style you drew. Line-art inbetweens are what it does today.

// line-art inbetweens
03

Keep, redraw, refine

Scrub through the result. Keep the frames that work, regenerate the ones that don't, redraw anything by hand. Nothing ships without you.

// you decide what's canon
04 — A tool, not a replacement

MotionCel exists to give 2D animators their time back — not to take their job. You draw the keyframes that carry the performance; we handle the repetitive frames in between. We don't train on your art, and we won't pretend the machine is the artist. It isn't. You are.

Your art is never trained on

We don't train models on your drawings. Your keyframes generate your inbetweens — nothing else, ever.

You stay in control

Regenerate any frame, redraw it by hand, or throw the result out. MotionCel proposes; you decide what's canon.

Built with working animators

Designed alongside 2D animators who do this for a living — for their workflow, not to replace it.

05 — FAQ

The honest answers.

Does this replace me as an animator?
No. You draw the keyframes and make every creative call. MotionCel only fills the in-between frames — it's a labor-saver for the tedious passes, not a decision-maker.
What art styles does it work with?
It's built for hand-drawn line art. The MVP focuses on clean line-art inbetweens; expressive, painterly and colored styles aren't supported yet.
Is my artwork used to train your model?
No. Keyframes you send for early-access testing are used only to generate your frames. We won't train on your art without explicit, opt-in permission.
When does it launch and what will it cost?
We're in early access now, onboarding animators in small batches. Pricing isn't set — waitlist members get first access and a say in it.
What software do I need? How do frames get in and out?
Today MotionCel takes your two keyframes as image files and returns line-art frames you bring back into your tool (TVPaint, Toon Boom, Krita, etc.). Deeper integrations come later.
How many frames can it generate between keyframes?
Short gaps work best — MotionCel is designed to fill the breakdowns and inbetweens between your own drawings, not author a whole sequence from two poses.
